Andrew Hutcheson Stirling Sprint Duathlon 2016

After a miserable Saturday, the Sunday race was looking bleak. However, the weather turned out to be dry with only a slight head wind on the way back on the bike. Despite the weather, I was really looking forward to racing at my university campus with coaches and friends looking on. The run takes form of two 2.5km laps with a short, sharp climb but otherwise, relatively flat. The first run I took relatively steady due to having no experience of duathlon before, bringing me back in 21:42. The bike was a flat 21km.

I was very cautious due to the wet, gravely roads, emphasised by two competitors crashing out meters in front of me half way through. I came off the bike with a time of 39:50, due to slow down for the crash and making marshals further up the road aware of the incident. My second run, a further 5km felt just like a triathlon run. I surprisingly, I came in 21:04 on it which I was very happy about. I felt I could have kept a higher pace had sections of the run not being so muddy. At one point I even seen a man running completely bare feet- not something I'd advise or practice myself! Overall, I was happy with my performance with the main focus being on my running.

Now, with my sights set on BUCS sprint triathlon, I will be doing more open water swimming with Vigour events while building up endurance for the ETU middle distance championships in September.

With training going well and with some extra help of coach Alan Cardwell I've had a really good BUCS event. He has been working on my body rotation and emphasising the movement of my hips and shoulders to get a high elbow and early catch. This really helped my body position and making swimming feel a lot faster for less effort!   The weather was lovely and warm down south near Bath. With a very high caliber field I was pleased with my results. 12:04 on the 750 pool based swim, dwarfing my previous personal best of 12:59!   The cycle was a 25k instead of the usual 20k with 2 short sharp hills! The way out felt relatively comfortable until you headed back into the strong head wind! I came in at 45:44 averaging 204 watts!  I was hoping to have a strong run (under 20) but with falling off my bike on Tuesday I claimed 20:26- still a pb for a 5k off the bike.

My overall placing was 179 and gender position 154 I was pleased with my first BUCS event. With Rio hopeful Gregor Benson coming second, the field was by far the most competitive I've ever been in! I relished the experience and look forward to next year!

Kamen Martin West Lancs Sprint triathlon

As an ambassador for your company I thought I'd let you know how I get on in my races.  Today I raced in the West Lancs Sprint triathlon. Coming into the race I felt confident after having a solid winters training behind me and so I proved to be!  My overall time was 1:00:09, with a bit of transition work I'll get sub 1 hour easily.

9th overall and 4th in age group.
